Hi Robyn
With all respect for your passion and for the work you do supporting military mothers ...
Maternity leave is not a luxury. It is a right articulated but the International Labour Organization. Neither the size of the militia, its country's commitments nor the bigotry of the personnel justify the denial of this right to mothers or their infants. The situation you describe is a clear case of systemic discrimination against women. The assumption that the system cannot and need not accommodate childbearing women (and that they should accommodate the system) only serves to maintain the status quo. I can't help thinking that if it were men who bore children, the situation would be very very different - even in the United States of America. I also wonder what it is that the militia defends, if not the right of citizens to a good life ... including the provision of proper care to its most vulnerable.
Warmly
