Hi Mary Kay -
A great place to start with this is Sara Fein's report on the infant feeding 
practices survey (FDA). This gives a good summary of when and why moms are 
discontinuing in the early stages of breastfeeding. The article is called 
"the effect of work status on initiation and duration of breastfeeding", but 
it discusses several other factors as well.

Another is Ertem's 2001 pediatrics article, "The timing and predictors of 
early termination of breastfeeding".
Sorry I can't do the full citation, I still have to figure out how to get 
endnote to do that for me...
