Dear Friends:
Kathleen makes an excellent point about mothers latching onto a phrase
(pardon the pun!) and obsessing about it. This particular mother had twins
first, who were in NICU for a while. She breastfed them for 8 months with no
support at all and was supplementing out of fear of lack of milk and that
lack of support.
So now she has one baby, and is fearful that the baby won't gain. She
was imprinted on lack of milk by that first, lonely and scary experience.
I have called her every day for that first week after our visit. I
offered her to come to my office at any time for a weight check. I have
encouraged her to laugh when she worries about hindmilk or supply by saying
"Look at your baby, she is working on her third chin!" or "Your baby is
nearly 4 pounds over her discharge weight" or "Your baby took in 1 ounce in
less than 4 minutes! That is a new indoor record!"
We have discussed the hind milk thing: how can she know which is
hindmilk when baby nurses, comes off, then wants more in 20 minutes? She
hasn't made it to a nursing mothers' support group yet, as she also has
2-year old healthy twins running loose.
Slowly, she is believing that she is doing it, and letting go of her
worries.
     Warmly,
