Andrea,

From what I have heard and read adoptive breastfeeding in America isn't the
same as in most countries. It is my understanding that around the world
adoptive nursing is very common and a full supply is always expected, even
if the nursing stand-in is a grandmother. In the U.S. it is common belief
that an adoptive mother will not expect a full supply and that seems to be
the case here. I am not sure what is at play here, other than the mother's
belief and lack of supplements in certain areas forcing adoptive mothers to
gain a full supply or have the child become sick or possibly die. Another
thing I have considered is that many adoptive mothers in the U.S. are women
who have fertility issues and are unable to become pregnant or sustain a
pregnancy. Whereas adoptive mothers in developing countries are usually
mothers or grandmothers that have successfully breastfed other children. I
would love to hear more about this phenomenon and hear the wisdom of the
list about this situation. I have given it much thought and I find it
fascinating.

She called me the next day after she had stimulated her breasts the night
before and said she was leaking and felt very full! Could it be possible,
do you think, that she could produce enough milk to not have to supplement
at all? Just wondering is anyone with more experience than me would care
to comment on their experiences with "relactation, or I guess this would be
more appropriately called adoptive bf. thanks:)
Have you heard?? Breast is Best!
