Huggins K, Petok E, Mireles O. Markers of lactation insufficiency: a study of 34 mothers. Current Issues in Clinical Lactation - 2000; 25-35. An excellent article with both illustrations and photographs, dividing breasts into 4 categories. Kathleen raises the *question* of whether stretch marks and insufficient milk might go together.

"Stretch marks on the breasts occurred with greater frequency as the severity of hypoplasia increased. Asymmetrical breasts and stretch marks occurred together 75% of the time. Might stretch marks be another indication of abnormal growth oon the more restricted breast base? While many mothers stated that they developed these stretch marks during adolescence, we did not record these findings. We also do not know the percentage of breastfeeding mtoehrs who produce sufficient milk who also have stretch marks on their breasts."
