Thanks to everyone for your input on the mom with herpes simplex on her nipples! I really appreciate it. The mom also took her toddler to a pediatric opthalmologist because she thought one of her eyes looked goopy (turned out to be unrelated), and was pleased that he -- although only one out of the four doctors she's consulted during this situation -- told her there was no reason to stop nursing. (I don't think she ever stopped nursing, anyway.)

Now I have just one more, probably stupid question: The next time the mom has an outbreak, will she get sores on her nipples again, or just the cold sores that she's previously had on her mouth?
