I am a little behind with lactnet, but I would like to post what  Leon Mitoulas, from Hartmann lab, answered re. the foremilk/Hindmilk composition:



"We do see, in some instances, higher fat contents in the fore milk of a feed later in the day than what was in the hind milk of a feed earlier in the day.  It does depend on the mother.


We too think the fore and hind phenomenon is due to the long intervals between feeds that have been perpetuated since the 'scheduled feeding' days.  As the fat content of the milk is related to the amount of milk in the breast, the change in fat content (from fore to hind) will be greater when the volume of milk removed from the fuller breast is a large proportion of what was available, and this is what can happen when there are long intervals between feeds.


However, our research (as well as that of others, see Butte et al., 1984, J Pediatr. 104, p187) has shown that it is the quantity of milk that is related to growth rate of term delivered babies and not the amount (concentration) of any one constituent (eg. fat, lactose, protein) in the milk."
