It makes sense to me in a linear way that recovering from major abdominal
surgery would heighten pain sensitivity or perception of pain because the
normal nerve stimulation patterns have been altered. It would follow that
because the mother's body, in whatever position she has chosen for
breastfeeding, is forced to redirect nerve impulses, the body would react
in ways to which she might not be accustomed. If she is multiparous (with
breastfeeding experience) but is breastfeeding for the first time following
cesarean delivery she might perceive greater or different discomfort or
pain.
