Our hospital frequently discharges moms at 24 hours if there is "no medical reason" to keep them. Babies frequently stay longer if "feeding difficulties" or other medical reasons exist. We "room-in" those mothers (subject to room availability) allowing them to stay free-of-charge. They no longer receive nursing care and do not accumulate a room charge. We do provide a meal tray for them. We no longer provide home visits as the hospital is not reimbursed for them. Case Managers have the very difficult job of sorting out what insurance companies consider medical reasons.
