I wanted to share an update about an issue that many of you helped me with 
in January.  I have my client's permission to relate her story.  To refresh your 
memories, a 2 year old nursling was going to have a tonsillectomy and the ENT 
told the mom that she couldn't nurse after the surgery for several days.  Here 
is mom's report of what happened  (I changed the child's name for privacy 
purposes):

 {"Amy" had her surgery yesterday morning.  I asked when I could nurse her 
during our consultation with the ENT and then the Anesthesiologist.  They 
both replied with the same answer and they weren't in the room at the same 
time.  They wanted me to wait until "Amy" would take ice chips and then juice 
and keep them down before I could nurse her.  "Amy" repeatedly asked to be 
nursed all morning before surgery.  Immediately after she came out of the 
recovery room, she went up to pediatrics.  As soon as I was able to hold her, 
she asked to be nursed.  The nurse said she had to have ice chips first.  "Amy" 
took one ice chip and started screaming.  After listening to her scream for a 
few minutes, I told my husband I didn't care what anyone said and all the 
breastfeeding experts said it was OK so I let "Amy" nurse.  She stopped crying, 
nursed and then fell asleep.  When she woke up, she ate two Popsicles, drank 
juice, ate part of my lunch and did so well that they released her a few hours 
later.  I know why she did so well--it was the breastfeeding , but I doubt that 
few people would believe me!
"Amy" is a little uncomfortable and needs pain med., but much, much better 
than her big brother was after his T&A.  He was 3 1/2 when he had the 
surgery and had stopped nursing by then. I know that he would have done 
better if I had still been nursing him.}

So, just like all of you wise lactnetters said, breastfeeding after the surgery 
was not a problem.  Thanks again to all of you for giving me the support so I 
could advise this mom so she had the courage to do what she knew was best 
for her child.
