Listmates -- I had a nurse from a smaller hospital recently ask us about

water feeds for newborns. THeir doctors want initial feeds of water

(x3!) to allow the baby to "clear the mucus" and show the baby will

tolerate oral feedings.... I'm not sure if they do this for

breastfeeding, but for sure for bottle babies. I realize this is a

breastfeeding listserv, but I'm hoping someone has the title or info of

a classic article that talks about not needing to do water feeds

initially (for whatever reason -- to clear mucous, see if baby tolerates

feeds, etc.).

I have been searching, but none of my reference books speak to it (I

think it's such an out-dated practice, no one even talks about it in the

books....). I've tried searching our library database, and didn't find

much either....

So, if anyone has a good article or finds something in a reference book

to provide evidenced-based info on why this is no longer the practice,

I'd appreciate your help!

Found lots about water supplementation and jaundice, but am looking for

something specific to first feeds and that you don't need to do that....

Thanks.
