Just have to respond to this thread, as I am one who is also disapointed
about the need to recertify by exam. The exam is a basic level testing,
much like an RN, sits for boards. However, as an RN you have certain
competencies you must maintain. I do understand that CEU's alone may be
inadequate, as have also seen people sleeping at conferences. (can't
understand that myself, as I always want more, more, more!!!) I think a
combination of ceu's and certain comptency requirements would make more
sense. You would expect the experienced LC to increase her knowledge base,
and the basic testing would not really be valid. It also invalidates the
test results as you are throwing in those who have practiced for many years
with those just embarking on this path. It seems it would be more important
to assure that the LC is maintaining her competencies along with attending
CEU training. Were a number of IBCLC's surveyed for ideas on how to do
this? Just my $.02
