Hi all:

I think I'm about to go out on a limb here... Although I agree wholeheartedly
with the responses to Dr. S's comments on putting crying baby to breast "too
soon" after last feed, I think his main thoughts have been ignored. He was
quite vociferous about: 1. responding immediately to crying baby and
potential effects of ignoring cries and 2. the benefits of wearing baby in a
carrier/sling. (So what if new parents try as a matter of convenience?!) He
also offered several other viable soothing ideas. And personally, I'd rather
see someone put baby down to cry for 10-15 minutes than be prosecuted for
abuse. Maybe a lot of parenting behaviors we're seeing are related to the
isolation of new parents in nuclear families--away from "clan" groups,
extended family, etc. who used to offer helping/holding hands when parents
felt at the end of their ropes. At any rate, while I disagree with a portion
of the article, I'd hate to throw the crying baby out with the bathwater!
(Didn't see rest of issue to comment.)

Re: Underwire bras. As someone who is not petite while breastfeeding and who
has suffered with flimsy nursing bras while dealing with her largess, there
is a reason many women will not put away their wires! However, most can be
fitted so that wires are well behind glandular tissue and so not compressing
on said tissue. Perhaps in addtion to proper fit, moms can be cautioned
about the possibility of wires on the move during vigorous exercise.
