Anyone who has used a supplementary nursing system to wean a 12 week old baby from bottles, can you please advise whether or not there is any advantage in a mother purchasing the Medela supplementary nursing system over rigging one up herself. Looking at it I would have thought that a normal bottle, hung upside down, with a soft naso-gastric tube inserted into the teat, would work just as well. Any comments on this.

Also, the baby in question has been breastfed for the past 12 weeks but has had supplmentary formula during this time and the mother wants to switcvh completely back to full breastfeeding so is hoping to use the supplementary nursing system to increase her milk supply. Has anyone got any idea of the ideal gauge for a nasogastric tube for a twelve week old baby who has got used to a normal bottle teat? Any feedback on how successful this is likely to be? This baby has had bottles for the last 72 hours exclusively due to the mother being very ill and unable to feed but now she is wanting to switch back.

Thanks for your comments,
