Hi Rachael,
I should clarify, that breast crawl is not something that is usually seen,
the children that I have reports of are nearly all over a year (a 5 year old
may just be sitting on their mum's lap for eg). However, it most definitely
it appears that other instinctual behaviours associated with self attachment
in newborns are evident. I have no doubt that given the right sort of
environment and need that the breast crawl behaviour can come to the surface
and be exhibited. I think that the need aspect is important. The children
that I have heard about (70 odd case histories so far) all had histories of
pretty severe neglect or abuse (often institutionalisation- orphanages are
really, really bad for kids...look carefully at any requests for donations
to set up an orphanage, it's nearly always a bad thing). Once placed in a
nurturing environment it appears that the unmet earlier needs and abilities
come to the surface. Imagine how freaky this can be for the
mums...especially those in an environment hostile to breastfeeding.
Hopefully, we can have a good chat over a hot chocolate next year when I'm
over our way!
