Before I ask my questions, I should introduce myself. My name is
Naomi Bar-Yam and I have been a childbirth educator and
breastfeeding couselor for the last 8 years or so. Currently, I am
also working on my PhD in social policy at the Heller School at
Brandeis University. My interest is in breastfeeding and the
workplace and the policy issues which arise. I have two questions
to pose here:
1. At the ILCA conference in Atlanta there was a session about
some legislation in Florida which mandated state agencies to offer

breastfeeding breaks or facilities for pumping for all employees
for whom it is relevant. At the time the program was being piloted
in Dade county. By now the pilot should be complete. Does anyone
know anything about this? What were the results? Is it being
implemented in other parts of the state now? Who can I contact for
more information?
2. Insurance companies are known to give discounts for good
health records. For example, nonsmokers and safe drivers get
breaks in their insurance. Their employers, who pay for the
coverage, get breaks too. Has anyone thought about offering
similar breaks for breastfeeding moms? Imagine what an incentive
it would be for employers to support breastfeeding in the
workplace. Does anyone know about work being done in this area?
Thanks for your help on this. Naomi Bar-Yam
