I was asked today if a pregnant woman with a history of Hepatitis C should be
encouraged to breastfeed. According to Ruth Lawrence, 4th Ed (pg207),
because of the risk of chronic liver disease, she should not. According to
LLLI Breastfeeding Answer book, its ok to nurse with non A & non B types
provided the mother feels well enough and she and the baby have been
immunized. This expectant mother is asymptomatic. There is no reference I
can find in Human Lactation on Hepatitis C. I would appreciate any
information on this. TYIA.
