Dear Colleagues:
    What an incredibly difficult case.
I haven't a clue, only ideas and questions. Either this baby lacks some
neuromuscular connection, or the baby has made a choice.
The worse case I ever heard of a baby with oral aversion (hold on to
your seats, dear friends, this next bit is absolutely dreadful, and the worst I
have ever heard) was one whose mother had rented the baby out to be used
sexually so she could buy drugs. The baby was 6 months old by the time Protective
Services took it away, and the challenge was for the baby to let anyone put
anything in its mouth. Another case with lack of hunger cues, lack of feeding
ability was a baby with severe Down's syndrome.
When the baby bf for a few minutes at a time, what is the situation
then? Day or night, who is present, what has preceded the successful feed? Maybe
playing detective here can yield more clues.
Maybe folks are pressuring this baby to eat so much that she is refusing
to let things go in her mouth? Maybe the mother could go to bed with baby
for 48 hours and be left alone and see what happens? She can pump and
tube/bottle feed if there isn't bf.
Karen, good luck with this and let us know what happens.
    warmly,
