Becky Behre,
What a terrible story. I would like to add that with this mom I told her that
her husband had to remain with her and the baby the whole time. First to keep
the baby warm by gently pouring warm water over the baby and second to keep
baby safe. I believe when rebirthing was explained at ILCA she specifically
said that there has to be a second person to handle the baby. I think it
would be unwise for a new mom to try this alone.
Thanks for the warning--we need to constantly remind mothers of safety issues
even if they seem like common sense.

Mitten danger
Speaking of safety, I had a go around with a couple of nurses the other day
about the mittens that mom's use to protect the baby from scratching his
face. These are often thin material and very loose. I know personally of 2
babies who choked to death in their cribs by sucking a mitten down their
throats.
I have gone on a personal crusade against these things-- one dead baby is one
too many.
I explain to parents that it is developmentally important for baby to touch
his face. Keep his nails short. If he scratches his face, he will learn it
hurts. A scratch will heal; the other consequence is permanent. Parents often
thow them out while I'm in the room. I've even had a couple take them back to
the store and convince the management to remove these items from the store.
Dad was a lawyer (he told the owner that they could be liable). Those that
still remain unconvinced I tell to go out and get long sleeve T shirts with
the cuff that folds over the hand.
(please feel free to pass this info on to Parent-L)
