It is certainly true that those of us without the correct initials
after our names cannot officially diagnose a "disease" state (e.g.
thrush).  What I will tell a mom who has a baby with white mouth
and/or blotchy diaper rash and mom has pink shiny nipples and
describes "shooting" or burning pain is: "What I'm seeing (or she's
describing) sounds a lot like thrush.  Only baby's doctor can say
for sure."  In talking with a doc, I'll say "What I'm seeing is
consistent with yeast/thrush."
I haven't personally seen a problem with overdiagnosing of yeast or
thrush.  It's usually just the opposite.  We can see all the
symptoms, but unless the entire inside of baby's mouth looks like a
marshmallow, some docs will not consider treating!  On the other
hand, a few are willing to treat based on the LC's suspicion alone.
Go figure!
