I've been reading the posts on military parents and I wanted to comment. I feel I have a "right" to since my son is in the army stationed in Germany (I am in U.S.) and my soon-to-be SIL is in the navy and will be deployed aboard a submarine at some point. There has been much in the news of
personal stories in recent months here in US because of current global actions. The story I saw that nearly made me cry was of 2 parents, both in the military, with a set of toddler twins and infant triplets. Both parents are deployed and one set lives with one set of grandparents, the other set
lives halfway across the country with the other set! How horrible for those children! I cannot imagine the trauma to those kids. The other story that seemed so tragic was of a 4 month old whose dad had never met him and was coming home from being deployed. One month after dad gets home, mom will
be deployed! This child will be left with someone he didn't even know until a month before! I think these are the truly tragic cases and the thing that is so unimaginable to me is that the parents (read: "mothers") are very matter-of-fact and philosophical about the situation. This is their job,
it's what they do. No comment on how this might affect the children. The focus of the second mother's story was how hard this would be on DAD!!!
BTW, my son says he is not making a career of the military as he once insisted he would. The reason: "it (the separation) isn't good for families". Did I raise him right or what?! (Of course, his new fiancée had a mighty influence too, I'm sure!)
