 Wendy,
These are the ingredients in the brand of gripe water you recommend:
Active ingredient: Sodium Bicarbonate BP 1.0% w/v. Also
contains Dill oil BP, Caraway oil BP Sucrose and Parabens.

The infant gut is not meant to digest sucrose.
Parabens are toxic:
From:
http://www.terressentials.com/truthaboutparabens.html

"The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their report
"Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment: Agents
of Subtle Change?" reported that the chemical preservatives called
parabens—methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl
(alkyl-p-hydroxybenzoates)—displayed estrogenic activity in several
tests. This means that these chemicals mimic your body´s own
hormones and can have endocrine-disrupting action when they are rubbed
into your body or washed down the drain into your drinking water. These
disruptors interfere with your body´s endocrine system: your
hypothalamus, your ovaries, your thyroid—virtually every system in your
body."

"Colic" is often resolved by removing foods from the mother's diet or treating structural problems.  Otherwise, I suggest castor oil packs when babies have upset tummies. We have no idea what these products do to babies' gut integrity.

Subject: gripe water

Re the recall of Bliss gripe water with apple flavour, do any British
Lactnetters have information on Nurse Harvey`s Gripe Water which has been the
classic colic remedy since my own kids were babies. It is sold here in Israel
and checking the ingredients there do not seem to be any preservatives or food
colouring - and it is effective. It is a myth that b/f babies never get tummy
ache - my 10-week old grandson feeds non-stop and gives a burp to be proud of.
However he does suffer from colic and I recommended N.H.Gripe Water as one of
the few remedies that don`t add sugar/additives etc.
