Kathy responding:  Mary, this last bit is a little confusing.  Are you
implying that 11.5 years is NOT early?  It is, in terms of averages for
modern industrialized countries, where the average is still 12.5 years, and
has been for the last 20 years or so.  11.5 isn't incredibly early, but it
is still a full year ahead of the average.  I had menarche at 14.5, which
was very late for my cohort (born in 1955) where most of the girls began
menstruating when they were 13.0.

Certainly the makeup, dress, and talk of boyfriends is cultural.

Definitely in lots of ways, but maybe/maybe not in terms of hormones and
puberty.
