The stories of unlikely people who have assisted with breastfeeding in the
hospital have been both sad and funny! Here's another. Twelve of the 13
maternity clinics in the City of Harare have achieved Baby-Friendly status
and *everyone* at each clinic has been through the training - from the
Matron and nursing staff through to the gardeners and security guards ("in
case the mothers have questions about breastfeeding when they are waiting
outside"). During our last Assessment, we quickly slipped in an extra
assessment form at the last minute - for the guard in the blue uniform and
peaked cap at the desk - he was *so* crestfallen not to have been randomly
picked we couldn't bear it. He was thrilled - and he "passed". I also have
very fond memories of going through a questionnaire with one of the male lab
technicians, who didn't even blink when I asked him to demonstrate how he
would teach a mother manual expression, as he grasped his lab-coat to his
chest and gave a perfect example of the Marmet technique. Don't you just
love it?
