A World Health Assembly consensus decision was taken Wednesday afternoon, May 16, to recommend as public health policy that exclusive breastfeeding be advocated to 6 months.
The Resolution will make reference to the report of the March Technical cConsultation which discussed individual case management to meet any needs that differ from this general recommendation. This is consistent with WHO/UNICEF existing agreement that a few infants over 4 months old may show one of 3 indications for giving some appropriate complementary foods in addition to continued very frequent breastfeeding, while most need nothing but exclusive breastfeeding to six months.
The text of the Resolution and a formal statement will soon be available.
