I forgot to mention the reason I asked about Colace and delayed stools and slow
weight gain - it was because I searched the Lactnet archives and found a
reference on June 24 and June 25, 1999. Someone posted with my same question and
(I don't know if it's okay to cite their name) someone replied that the same
thing happened to her granddaughter who was "taking Colace EVERY day." And that
she thought there was a correlation between Colace and slow weight gain in the
baby.

Also, I wanted to clarify that it's not that the baby hasn't had "any" bm's. She
did have one on the 8th day. I mentioned that in the first post, but should have
mentioned it again. They brought the baby into the doctor's office on 8th day, he
inserted a rectal thermometer and the baby had a massive bm. I think the mother
sounds like quite a nervous mother, and I'm wondering if that's not the real
problem here. However, I don't know. I think many of you are right, the answer is
definitely more assessment. Yes, the baby falls asleep at the breast. But mother
says it is after she has been nursing for a long time. I think this sounds very
normal. What one week old does not fall asleep at the breast after nursing? It's
all they do in the first few weeks. I'm suspicious that the mother just does not
understand normal newborn behavior. That newborns sleep almost all of the time
during the first few weeks, except for when they are eating. Since the baby was
seemingly "unable" to have the bm on her own though, mom is extremely worried and
so is doctor. I think they maybe hitting the panic button too early. The baby is
nursing for long periods at the breast, the LC seems to think she has a good
latch, the baby is having lots of wet diapers, she passed her meconium, and did
have large bm (mom says it looks like 5 days worth of poop!). I'm thinking we
should watch her closely, encourage her to nurse more frequently, and not scare
her to much because I think she already very emotional and really needs some
encouragement.

Does anyone know of any reason why the baby may not be stooling on her own? I've
been helping this mom because a similar thing happened with my daughter when she
was born. She passed her meconium, and then didn't have a bm for a week. We took
her to the doctor he did same thing, inserted a gloved finger, and Viola! A
weeks's worth of bm's (on the x-ray table, by the way). And then she never had
another problem after that. Big weight gainer, too.

I'm going to find out today is the baby has gained any weight yet. I sure hope
so. I was somewhat concerned that she hadn't gained yet, especially since the
baby is small. But I have to say that I wasn't that concerned because many baby's
do lose during the first week, and don't start gaining until the second. This
baby is only about 10 days old.

Again thanks to everyone who has given me so many wonderful suggestions.
Especially the suggestions about hindmind/foremilk, I think that is a definite
possibility!

Thank you,

Tricia Palleja
