Elisa,
Perhaps my nursing background takes the lead here, but I do use gloves when
assessing mom's breasts, baby's mouth, and when handling milk or pump parts.
I make sure, though, that the mom understands that their use is mainly for
the protection of mom and baby, since hospitals are high sources of germs.
In my private practice, I do the same. In my thinking, its better to be
over-protective than not. The same goes with hand-washing, which I do upon
entering and before exiting the mom's hospital room. Moms and other family
members seem to appreciate this, especially when they see other health care
professionals NOT doing it!!
