I believe the extra fat put on during pregnancy is to help sustain lactation
IN THE CASE OF INSUFFICIENT CALORIC INTAKE IN THE MOTHER POST-PARTUM.  That
is to say -- it's not for NORMAL breastfeeding needs, it's the emergency
stockpile in case of famine or drought or crop-failure after the mother
gives birth.  Therefore, one would not expect to lose it naturally in the
course of lactation if the mother has access to adequate food and is eating
to satisfy her hunger.
