Friends------
I need some advice and help. Last year I wrote about an individual that had
let her IBCLC expire. I pursued that and she was encouraged to sit the exam
with me in July. She did not and states she has no intention of ever
resetting the exam. She feels the IBCLC status will not make her any better
lactation consultant or improve her practice.
I shared the new eligibility requirements for 2003 at our lactation meeting
Tuesday with the hopes that would spur them on to prepare for the exam this
summer. It was met with "that is ridiculous" etc. I tried to explain that
the standards are trying to be raised and that I endorse that.
I am currently the only regular IBCLC of 4 at our hospital. The department
head who last year begged me to take the exam is now feeling a CLE is enough.
You can imagine how devaluing this is for me after sweating over the exam.
Does anyone have any stats, research, laws, insurance info that they can
share with me? We do charge for lactation consults.
Feeling discouraged and devalued. Please feel free to e-mail me privately.

Shirley A. Hayman RN BSN IBCLC (and proud of it!)
