I'm at home with the flu, so don't have references handy, but there is ample
research showing that oxytocin is not released by the pituitary under
conditions perceived as stressful by the mother. This is why labor often
slows down when mom goes to hospital, and why it can be difficult to achieve
MER under stressful conditions. What is stressful for one mother may not be
for another. I clearly remember having to really concentrate, do my LaMaze
breathing, and *visualize* MER in order to let down for the pump in the
pumping room at the NICU with my son Peter. The New York Academy of
Sciences publishes a research series and has an entire volume on oxytocin
research from the early 90s, as I recall.
