Karen,
I have only seen 2 home birthed babies that had suck problems unrelated to
tongue tie (I have seen quite a few with tongue tie). One had an oral
hypersensitivity, possibly due to the midwife suctioning him vigorously
because he was very mellow at birth (waterbirth) and she was nervous that he
wasn't more vigorous. Now that she has attended more water births, she found
that many such babies are mellow and she discontinuted suctioning them uless
there is an additional indication. The other just needed a tiny bit of jaw
support until he got going well. There is quite a homebirth underground in
NYC, as most of the hospitals are not family centered, so this is based on a
decent sample size.
