I thoroughly agree with Melissa Vickers point about LLL leaders
concentrating on the mother-to-mother support and not having time to
devote to activism. That is why I suggested to officials of LLL that
another category of volunteer be created "LLL Breastfeeding Advocate"
With a packet of activism materials, and a little training in grassroots
activism, a lot of moms who don't have the time or the personality (I
wonder who I'm thinking of, says the irascible Rachael) to be leaders
could give back to LLL by going to the media and the legislatures and
demanding a better environment for women to nurse. I particularly think
this would be a great way for moms who have to work to get involved in
the LLL organization. I get the feeling that they think it's a good idea
in theory, but that there is no organizational support for actually doing
anything about it.
