Dear Carrie,

Nursing should not cause anemia as the amount of iron in breastmilk is very
small. If the mom was not anemic before childbirth, she needs to take a
careful look at her diet. If she is not getting a decent amount of iron of
good bioavailability ( that which is easily absorbed by the body), then
that is a more likely explaination for her anemia. It can be easily
corrected by iron supplements and/or iron rich foods such as red meat,
organ meats, green veggies ( probably all except spinach which has iron but
it is not very bioavailable). She does not need to wean her toddler if she
doesn't want to. If she is anemic inspite of this then she needs to have a
work up done for other causes of anemia.
