Book Review for our ILCA chapter newsletter.

Many of us are familiar with Dr. Jack Newman's parent information sheets
that he has generously shared with all of us. Now these sheets form the
basis of "Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding" by Dr. Jack Newman and
Teresa Pitman. C. 2000, Harper Collins, ISBN: 0-00-638568-0.

The "Guide" is a very consumer oriented book, designed to empower women as
they breastfeed in our bottlefeeding cultures. Almost every chapter begins
with a breastfeeding myth that Dr. Jack thoroughly refutes in his
inimitable way. As you can tell by the chapter titles this book will be a
valuable resource for breastfeeding moms.
I. The Normal Way to Feed Your Baby: 1. Why Breastfeeding Is Important, 2.
Finding Good Breastfeeding Help, 3. The Sale & Promotion of Infant Formula;

II. An Ounce of Prevention: 4. Getting Off to the Best Start;
III. Common Problems and Solutions: 5. Not Enough Milk, 6. Sore Nipples, 7.
Sore Breasts, 8. Jaundice, 9. Colic, 10. When Baby Refuses the Breast, 11.
Breastfeeding While on Medication, 12. Maternal Illness and Breastfeeding,
13. Sick Babies, Premature Babies, Special Babies, 14. Special Situations;
IV. You and Your Breastfed Baby: 15. Breastfeeding and Other Foods, 16.
Sleep: Yours and Your Baby's, 17. Breastfeeding and Family Relationships,
18: Breastfeeding and Mother-Baby Separation, 19. Breastfeeding the
Toddler, 20. Quick Questions and Answers.
Resources for Good Breastfeeding Help, Acknowledgements and Index.

Professionals may be concerned with the lack of meticulous references,
however as the back cover states: "Dr. Jack Newman gives more than medical
advice, he gives support and encouragement that women need to enjoy the
wonderful experience that breastfeeding should be. If this is your first
baby or your fourth; if you're pregnant, breastfeeding your newborn or
wondering about weaning your toddler: if you're eighteen years old or
forty-five, this book is for you."

The photography is superb. A series of the newborn latching with
explanations of good latch is wonderful. Positioning pictures, toddlers
nursing, and others are sprinkled throughout the book adding to it's
usefulness.
