try checking the archives for "suck training" posts, ..I, like many others,
took a suck training 2 day course some years ago w/Chele Marmet from the
Lactation Institute in Ca.

works sometimes very well for tongue up babies, disorganized suck etc...

several months ago, I used a nipple shield to suck train a frantically hungry
< 24hr old newborn who in spite of much baby effort and LC facilitation could
not latch onto perfectly fine nipples!

....I decided the inability to latch/disorganized suck in this case was
probably due to a difficult birth; baby's face was misshapen & swollen by the
birth, ....finger suck training just didn't do the job, after trying that, and
everything else, baby *could* latch onto shield, ..mom was so relieved and
appreciative that baby was sucking ....almost at breast,

we discussed why/how to delete shield etc, mom seemed she would be very
compliant in the management plan........

....mom used the shield for many "feedings" over the next ~18 hours and had
the baby latched for a few feedings without the shield before I got back to see
her the next day, ...mom was so happy about how this worked out, ...me too.
