From my wound specialist office mate -- this is an old discussion, she must be VERY behind on her emails!

Hi Dawn, I don't see a problem with using this wrap. I'd be really concerned if she was using a steroidal cream under the plastic wrap but as far as using just an ATB ointment I don't see any problem. I know that some dermatologists will order a steroidal cream under a plastic wrap which will kind of boost the steroid potency by covering it with an occlusive wrap. There are alot of transparent dressings. They're like saran wrap except they are porous and have a moisture vapor transport rating which allows air & moisture to flow thru dressing but prevents bacteria from coming in. The saran wrap would be totally occlusive (depending on how well she wraps- I would assume some air would be getting in around her nipples).
I do wonder if she needs to use an ATB ointment. It's best to use ATB's only if there is an infection. If there is no infection & she just wants something to keep open areas moist she could try a hydrogel such as curasol from healthpoint, or even KY jelly is a hydrogel. Then she could put saran wrap over that.
I have definitely heard of nurses & doctors using plastic wrap in wound care. Main concern would be if there was a yeast infection involved or like I mentioned steroidal creams. What's nice about plastic wrap is it's cheap and doesn't stick so there's no pain upon removal.

Kate
