Mary Ann,
I notice that this unsupportive doc is female. Does she have children of her
own? I wonder if you could initiate a discussion with her about her own
experiences and attitudes re: infant feeding? Perhaps she had a bad experience
with breastfeeding her own child or has body image or sexual abuse issues.
Maybe expressing empathy and acceptance for a particular mom who is truly
unable to breastfeed would give you a foot in the door here. I do think it
would do less damage to have her handle moms who are intending to bottlefeed,
but it also insulates her from learning from her patients if she is not
totally closedminded. Just MHO. Good luck.
