I've been asked several times recently about the differences in using a hand
vs electric pump. Usually it is motivated by cost concerns, but sometimes
people just don't get it. I'm not feeling too clever lately and wonder if anyone
has a respectful explanation to share with parents and staff. The only
comparisons I can think up are hand saw vs. chain saw and appliance metaphors!
Would also like to contribute to the recent thread on trying to nurse after
postpartum. A recent caller wanted to "try" to breastfeed after 13-14 days. Was
told that she'd have better luck if she used a hospital grade pump. Husband
called back and wanted to know why a "cheaper" pump wouldn't work. Also wanted
a guaratee that she would be able to breastfeed. Didn't want to pay for a
consult or make a real effort. Had the pump for about a week and brought it back
because "she didn't get anything." Sigh...

Also want to offer kudos to Ellen Penchuk for her informative article in the
latest LEAVEN. It contains some excellent informaton in very clearly
understood language. This one will go in my files for future reference.
