My understanding is that this comes from the New Zealand situation, where
the Maori mothers SMOKE IN BED with their infants.  No, I was not kidding.
During the day, baby may be separated from mom by several to many feet of
distance.  During the night, baby is tucked right in next to mom while she
puffs away in its face.  Of course this is a dumb thing to do -- we all
agree about that.  But rather than try to stop mothers from smoking in bed,
or from smoking at all, the recommendation has been to not co-sleep with
baby.
