Just wanted to let Lactnetters know about a recent discovery regarding the
Enfamil formula discharge bags "for breastfeeding mothers," (The
Breastfeeding Success Bag). Hanging off the side of the bags are small
information cards titled
"Safety Tips." Topics include choking, poisoning, etc. The back of the
last card deals with the topic of SIDS. The card list s 5 ways to
"significantly reduce" the risk of SIDS, and (surprise, surprise)
breastfeeding is not one of the ways. The card instructs moms to contact the
CJ Foundation for SIDS for further information, and lists a website. I
thought I would check out the CJ Foundation website to find out what it was
all about. Turns out that the website lists 6 ways to decrease the risk of
SIDS including breastfeeding! I e-mailed the CJ Foundation twice to ask if
they were aware of the excluded information, but never got any response. Of
course, we are always trying to get rid of these "helpful" bags anyway, but
we run into an unbelievable amount of opposition. Despite what I know of
formula companies, I have to say I was still surprised at this new low.
