It seems to me that using the  term "protects from...." implies that if you 
do A, B will never occur  You  are "protected."  
 
Wearing a seat belt does not  protect me from injury or death in case of a 
head on collision, but the  likelihood of serious injury or death is reduced.  
IOW, it reduces the  risk.
