Hi- I've been asked by a local NICU nurse about ways to keep the correct
mom's expressed breast milk going to the right baby. Apparently there's
been several recent mix-ups where a mother's milk went to someone else's
baby. One question she asked: Is it ok to check milk ID's at the beginning
of the 8hour nurses shift and leave it hanging at bedside for the next 6-8
hours? (to minimize the number of times milk needs to be distributed and
therefore decrease chances for error) I have Riordan & Auerbach's book
summation stating 4 hours out (for a NICU) is ok, but has that changed as
other studies have okayed longer room temp storage for term babies? What
other ways do your NICU's find efficient/accurate to verify mom/baby milk?
Thanks, Susan Lawrence, IBCLC
