most parents I speak with intended not to give a pacifier, but almost all do it. The reason
is that they feel they cannot meet the sucking neds of the child. They think nursing is for
feeding alone and it is tiring. So, when the baby shows /she wants to suck allt he time they
'give in' and give a pacifier.

Often it is also the maternity nurse who gives it.
