I would rather try to solve the problem that is making the baby
uncomfortable than give any foreign substance to a breastfed baby. Even
the sugars in these things can be problematic, lactose has special
"trophic" (tissue building) functions in the gut that other sugars do
not, and can interfere with. (Niles Newton's Biological Specificity of
Milk discussed this). If a baby is always unhappy and you are convinced
the feeding is fixed, an occupational therapist could be helpful.
There's a new service run by an OT and a social worker in my area called
"Fussy Baby Support Services" and they are great. Perhaps there are
similar resources for moms elsewhere.
