Judy asks,
"Do these reactions, transitions
never cause problems in babies who are artificially fed from birth? I
wonder..."

Indeed. As I think it was Rachel who commented, there are contented,
placid artificially fed babies and tense, "high-maintenance" breastfed
ones; and then, there are contented, placid breastfed babies and
tense, "high-maintenance" artificially fed ones. Somehow, I guess because
so many people still haven't realized that breastfeeding isn't only about
eating, there is the sense that "if only she could take the bottle,"
everything would be settled, when in fact, the transition might be just as
painful if the baby were bottlefed.

I believe this mother is already grieving, too, and the worry she voiced
about the caregivers' rejecting her crying baby is in large part an
expression of that grief.
