do wish the word would get out to mothers of premies
that pumping
excessive amounts milk is not of benefit to the baby.
Most of the
medical
support persons just cheer them on and exclaim about
their vast stores
in
the freezer.
--------------------

I can't remember who said that, sorry. But the
Mother's milk club at Rush Presbyterian in Chicago,
which is run by Paula Meier finds just the opposite.
Their mothers pump enough milk so that if the mother
quit pumping or nursing on the day their micropremmie
left the hospital, they would have enough milk to
exclcusively feed human milk for 2-3 months. The
protocol for pumping is truly impressive and works
well for these mothers. Sufficient storage space is
crucial in this hospital.

Of course, these families appear to be extremely well
supported by the staff and are likely counseled on
managing breastfeeding when they leave the hospital.
that rarely happens, AFAICT.
