Hi! and Happy Thanksgiving wherever in the world you all are....
This note is for Chris who is tired of nurses who afraid of instilling
"guilt" for not breastfeeding. Gimmme a break. My partner and I have heard it at
our facility about our posters. What is wrong with a little guilt. Mothers
have used it the world over for centuries. Posters are making people rethink
their position on a subject. There is nothing wrong with that. No one is wagging
a finger in their faces and saying "See what you have done to your child by
not making the choice ". Only their conscience is maybe saying "why didn't I
think of it or why couldn't I see it before."
I often wish we could say "Hey Look at what you are doing!" but in all clear
conscience people will do what they want to in the end." The old adage of
leading the horse to water stands true and firm. Only education is the key to
changing a mindset. Evidence base is good for most of the crowd but there will
always be a few non-believers. We ourselves know that present the information
and mutter a prayer that the light may go on for the patient/client is
sometimes the only way to get them to reconsider. Chris go to the Patient Education
Committee at your facility and ask them to look at your posters if they can
help this is a good hot spot...because ours they loved and awarded it first
prize in the hospital poster contest for Patient Education Week....so now they
stand in the hallway with their blue ribbons proudly displayed...oh yeah a few
said it made the visitors uncomfortable to see breastfeeding babies and mom's in
a cultural one...so we moved it more near the admitting office....they still
see it...just in a different location.
Good Luck,
Leanne Jewell, RN,C, IBCLC, LCCE, FACCE
