I've not heard of cherry flavoring either--but isn't Tylenol cherry
flavored?
If she (the nurse) is dispensing Tylenol without an order from an
MD--that's
a problem. Secondly, they may not be orally feeding the baby if he has an
umbilical catheter in(depending on their policy), but should be freezing the
colostrum if it won't be used within 48 hours(usual hospital policy). But
here's a thought--if baby is npo, he should be getting mouth care for
comfort. How about using colostrum?? That's what we do sometimes in our
NICU. On the pacifier issue--it should be mother's breasts used to comfort
the baby. However, if it is an issue of baby's safety or lack of stability
that he truly can't come off the warmer, then it would be cruel to withhold
non-nutritive sucking from this baby as a means of soothing, when the mother
is not available. A little colostrum could be put on the pacifier for
"flavoring".....just some ideas.
