LACTNET Digest - 5 May 2005 to 6 May 2005 - Special issue (#2005-545)A well
know midwife from the DC area is doing relief work these past months in
Sumatra. She is the only health care worker at a very busy clinic in a
Tsunami ravaged coastal community. I spoke with her last night as she
reported such utter destruction and despair. Every person has family
members lost, many are sole survivors. She states that government estimates
of the death toll are severely misrepresented and the relief organizations
predict death tolls much greater. They are still recovering bodies from
rubble. People come into the clinic with any number of ailments from
headaches to severe hypertension and heart disease... and she is treating
them with well needed medications, etc provided by relief organizations like
UNICEF, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, and others not as well known in the
USA. She reports that powdered milk distribution in the area where she
is...is DIRECTLY responsible for a reported 62 infant deaths. It was not
done maliciously but as a result of mis-education about the risks of
artificial milk. The relief organizations are doing the best they can with
very few volunteers whom are unfortunately and tragically misinformed and
miseducated. How sad. When will the great money making formula companies
be rained in by a world that understands and respects the health and well
being of all its women and children?
