Isn't it amazing how people think that there is something wrong with a
baby being a baby? Babies are dependent; they can't help it. Yet our culture
teaches that this is wrong (more paradox here) and must be trained
away/ignored/or substitute some plastic gadget.
How true. This reminded me of my consult yesterday. Was called to see a 2 day
old, Mom giving D5W supplements via syringe because baby feeding every hour
or more. Mom stated as soon as I walked into the room that she had read
"Babywise" and was intent on putting baby on a schedule from the beginning. She then
went on to describe her 14mth nursing experience with her now 3yo child
stating all went well, baby fed every 2-3 hrs at the beginning and this was fine
with her. A light bulb went off for her husband(who I thought was sleeping in the
chair!) when I asked WHY she felt the need to change when "she did such a
good job the first time"....He exclaimed-thats a great ??....I went on to talk
about the real concerns with this backwards scheduling approach . All Mom could
say was her friend's child had slept through the night at an early age and she
"swore by" the program! ARGHHH -sometimes I'm surprised that I still have
teeth left in my mouth after gritting them so much!!
